Obedience Day 1

Isaiah 6:9-13
9 He said, “Go and tell this people: “‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving. 10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn and be healed.” 11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?” And he answered: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged, 12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away and the land is utterly forsaken. 13 And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.”
When Isaiah 6 is taught, people often stop with verse 8. Then, with excitement ask something like, "God is calling you, will you obey? Lets go! He is sending us. Of course, that is true and vital God saves us to send us. However, Isaiah 6 does not stop there.

In verse 9-13, you will see that the King sent Isaiah to point people to God. However, it was not going to be easy. The reality is that being obedient to the Lord is often not going to be received well by the world around us.

Remember, Jesus does not promise us an easy life. He promises us an eternal life. Obeying the Lord will often make living in the world more difficult, yet we will be more joyful, fulfilled, and at peace because we are being obedient to our great King.

In verse 13, the King sent Isaiah out to be faithful to the stump. What this means is that no matter how bad the world gets, there will always be people who faithfully obey the Lord. For Isaiah, this stump would eventually turn into a flourishing tree with many people now in the kingdom of God.

Obedience is more than a "get out of hell free" card; it is obeying God even when it's difficult. This was what Isaiah went through. God was sending him, and Isaiah obeyed.

Reflection Questions:

1.) What makes obeying a calling like this difficult
2.) Have you experienced push back or minor persecution because you were obeying the Lord? What happened?
3.) Where is God sending you?
4.) Are you willing to say yes, even when it's going to be difficult

Pray:

Read Acts 1:8
Spend time reflecting on the Holy Spirit. Surrender to His calling

Read Acts 13:47
Are you willing to be sent out to point people to the King? Empty out by confessing any fears and hesitations you have. Ask God to replace fear with confidence

Read Mark 16:15
